Dr. Béla Merkely was elected as the forthcoming rector of Semmelweis University by the Senate

The Senate of Semmelweis University has audited the introductory programmes of both rector candidates, Dr. László Hunyady and Dr. Béla Merkely at the Senate meeting held on December 14, 2017. The Senate elected Dr. Béla Merkely, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs, President of the Clinical Centre and Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre as the forthcoming rector via secret ballot.

On the basis of the National Higher-Education Law of 2011, the recommendation regarding the forthcoming rector will be sent by Semmelweis University to the Hungarian Government. The suggestion related to the assignment of the new rector will be sent by the Minister of Human Capacities to the President of Hungary, who will appoint the new rector of the university starting from July 1, 2018 for a 5-year-period.

As it is known, the assignment of Dr. Ágoston Szél, the current rector of the university will end on June 30, 2018, and it cannot be extended, since based on the National Higher-Education Law, within a higher-education institution the same person can remain in the rector position for a maximum of two times.
