Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary is a youthful institution with a long tradition. The university was established in its present form in 1993, although its legal predecessors date back to 1839 and 1855.
The university combines the traditions of Reformed education and an openness to professional innovation. Our students enjoy a friendly environment in which they acquire up-to-date knowledge that is based on a solid, value-driven Christian ethos. Furthermore, we place considerable emphasis on community-oriented education, the personal relationship between professors and students as well as on the support of student initiatives.
Our more than 7000 students can conduct their studies at the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Teacher Training. The central location of most of the university buildings in Budapest provides students with an exciting cultural environment that enjoys an international reputation.

Our study programmes offered in foreign languages:
MA in English Studies (English)
The objective of the two-year MA programme in English Studies is to acquaint students with a broadly defined concept of English literary culture, including its history, major trends, critical schools and its most representative works and authors. The programme consists of compulsory courses and a strand in English literature which contains electives. Apart from specialized literature courses offered on various periods and aspects of English literature, this programme also includes the Christian tradition in English literature, and the influence of the Bible on it. Students are required to submit a thesis at the end of their studies, which will have to be defended at the final examination.
Master in Deutscher Sprache, Literatur und Kultur Das Masterstudium Deutsche Sprache, Literatur und Kultur an der KRE vermittelt eingehende Fachkenntnisse in den Bereichen deutsche Literatur, Sprache und Kultur. Mit durchgehend aktualisierten Unterrichtsschwerpunkten und -methoden werden hier Philologen ausgebildet, die die beruflichen Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts auf hohem geistigen Niveau bewältigen können.
Nach den einführenden Basismodulen werden frei wählbar zwei Fachrichtungen angeboten. Die Fachrichtung Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft fokussiert Fragen der Medialität, Intermedialität, Interkulturalität, Kulturvermittlung und vergleichende Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft. In zwei Werkstätten für Talentförderung können sich interessierte Studenten in den Bereichen literarischer Übersetzung und interkultureller Germanistik weiterbilden.
Im Programm ’angewandte Linguistik’ liegt der Schwerpunkt auf den Bereichen Lexikologie und Lexikographie. Studenten, die sich für die Herstellung von gedruckten und online Wörterbüchern interessieren, können im Rahmen eines internationalen MA-Studiums, die modernen Verfahren vom Wörterbuch-Desing und Wörterbuchschreiben lernen.
Das Programm EuropäischerMaster für Lexikographie (EMLex) ist ein internationaler Studiengang, der von 8 Universitäten gemeinsam angeboten wird und für die Studierenden einen einsemestrigen Auslandsaufenthalt beinhaltet. Die Studenten erhalten ein Double-Degree von der Homeland- und Gastland-Universität.
EMLex: European Master in Lexicography - international and interdisciplinary programme (German and English)
The programme provides an excellent opportunity for those, who are interested in compiling dictionaries, working with linguistic databases and would like to study at famous European universities which co-organise this special programme.
Kodály Culture in Hungary and Worldwide Specialist Postgraduate Programme (English)
The programme trains teachers enabling them to develop colourful, varied and impressive music classes, using the most recent methods and the educational power of music training with emphasis on the practical application of Kodály’s [world-famous Hungarian composer, researcher and music pedagogue Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967)] concept.
PhD in Theology (English and German) The Reformed Theological Academy of Budapest, the predecessor of the Faculty of Theology of Károli Gáspár University, has been issuing doctoral degrees since World War II. The Doctoral School in Theology and the doctoral council, which were recognized by the Hungarian Academic Committee, were founded in 1992 after they were accredited by the state. The Doctoral School prepares candidates in the field of theology. The aim of the programme is to teach students the most recent research methodology, to prepare them for individual academic work, to participate in conferences, and to help them gain teaching experience in higher education.
LL.M. in European and International Business Law (English) The programme of LL.M. in European and International Business Law is a master-level programme targeting professionals who already hold a degree in law. The programme provides highly specialized legal training in English. The objectives of the programme are to train experienced lawyers who would like to develop a greater competence in European and international business/commercial/economic law, to deepen their knowledge of the complex legal regulations of intra-and extra-European economic transactions and relations, and to train themselves in specialized legal English as a working language. The lecturers are renowned professionals of their field, both as academics and practitioners from law firms, judiciary and top-level international or domestic legal organisations.
