South American delegation visited Semmelweis University

A South American delegation visited Semmelweis University recently to discuss a prospering medical cooperation. 

At the invitation of Dr. Béla Merkely, Argentinian, Paraguayan and Mexican cardiologists visited Semmelweis University on 30 August, during their two-day trip to Budapest. The delegation, who came to Hungary from the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology, was received by Rector Béla Merkely, who presented the university and its international relations. Referring to the achievements of Semmelweis University in international rankings, he emphasized that one of his main goals as rector is for Semmelweis University to be among the top 100 higher education institutions of the world in the forthcoming years.

The delegation was led by Dr. Maria Paniagua de Decoud, former president of the South American Society of Cardiology, and Dr. Javier Galeano, former president of the Paraguayan Society of Cardiology. Dr. Maria Paniagua de Decoud briefly stated that cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death for women in Paraguay, which is why she and her colleagues work on drawing attention to the symptoms of cardiovascular diseases affecting women, as well as to their treatment. After the meeting, a joint symposium attended by Dr. Béla Merkely was held at the Heart and Vascular Centre with the participation of the delegation members.
